Hardwoods

Hardwood decking is an excellent option for those who prefer the natural beauty of wood, yet still desire a long-lasting deck.  Readily available in several species, including Ipè, Batu, and Tigerwood, we recommend hardwood decking to those who want to make a statement with their deck, or front entry.

Hardwood decks can be finished with oil to illuminate their rich wood tones, or allowed to grey for that classic Cape Cod look. Either oiled or weathered, hardwoods will outlast any other wood decking option. Though the upfront cost may be more than other decking options, the added lifespan may prove to be worth it.

Composites

Composite decking proves to be more popular all the time, due to its low maintenance requirements, and ever-increasing product options. Though not completely maintenance free, composite decking is perhaps the most maintenance friendly option for a deck. Many people prefer composite decking for its smooth surface, which can be more forgiving on bare feet.

Budget options for composite decking vary greatly depending on product style, and manufacturing brand. However, considering its ease of maintenance, many people choose composite decking as their number one option.

Cedar

Cedar is the classic Pacific Northwest decking option. Although today’s second growth cedar lumber does not have the famed rot-resistance of it’s old-growth predecessors, it remains the best affordable outdoor wood option. When properly cared for, and maintained, cedar decking can prove to have a heathy lifespan.

Being a softwood lumber species, cedar is ideal for absorbing deck oil, stain, or varnish. Cedar’s rich wood tones and knotty appearance come to life when the right finish is applied and only improves with regular maintenance. Cedar also proves to be the best option if you prefer a customized color finish.

Treated Lumber

Treated Lumber decking is an economical, and sturdy choice for those who want a no-frills, utilitarian deck experience. Treated lumber decking must be sealed with a weather repellent deck sealer prior to installation in order to prevent water penetration, which can cause surface cracking. Treated lumber decking lasts longest when regularly sealed and maintained, and when used in locations that are protected from full sun exposure.

Railing Options

Deck railings are a code requirement on any deck surface with a height of thirty-six inches or greater. Thun Construction offers many design options to fulfill this requirement. Ranging from powder-coated steel or aluminum, wood-and-metal hybrid designs, brand name composite railing kits, glass panel, stainless cable, or simple wood, we can help you choose a design that fits your budget and your style.

We can also install various types of low-voltage deck lighting. Many railing manufacturers offer integral lighting systems which make lighting options simple to design, and easy to install.
